Over at LifeClever they have a great article covering ten tips for keeping your desk clean and tidy. I’m sure many of you will know how tricky it can be to make something tidy and keep it that way. I thought I would add to these points with my own experiences and ideas. As my job and general lifestyle doesn’t really require me to follow GTD to the letter, I can pick and alter elements of it to suit my personal needs, hence the following (arguably non-GTD friendly) tips. Hope you find them useful.
Keep paperwork under your keyboard. You don’t want a books worth under there obviously but as I spend a lot of time at the computer it’s quite handy to keep temporary sheets like unpaid bills and printouts. It’s especially handy if you are using some reference papers for work on your computer and you want them near to hand but not have them spread out all over the table.
Though the LifeClever article swears off using post-its I always have some on my table for jotting down those really generalized notes or niggly stuff that don’t really require you spending time organizing it in any great manner. In a similar approach I stick a piece of blue-tak on the monitor for holding things like vouchers and receipts. This way I know where they are all the time. It’s similar to sticking stuff to the fridge, but as a lot of my time is at the computer it makes sense to have them there instead. Invariably those sort of items won’t be around for long, so don’t need any excessive filing applied to them.
It is important of course, that the above be done in moderation and with some degree of organization to it. You need to review those stickies and/or those papers under your keyboard on a regular basis like you would everything else.
