Formula For Procrastination Found?

January 13th 2007   Productivity   No comments

Seeing as both ScienceDaily, CNet News and the place I got the original story from (Slashdot) have more than enough procrastination jokes I will just get straight to the point. A University of Calgary academic has done ten years (no comment…) of research into procrastination and its causes. They have discovered that…

Essentially, procrastinators have less confidence in themselves, less expectancy that they can actually complete a task… Perfectionism is not the culprit. In fact, perfectionists actually procrastinate less, but they worry about it more.

Or, if you want it in a formula:

Utility = E x V / S x D

To prove that almost anything can be scientifically analysed check out the author’s site and read some of his theories. In particular, scroll down for an in depth explanation of how exactly the above formulae works. In the upcoming weeks I will take a detailed look at the formula and try applying it to real world circumstances.
