As we get more space on our computers and can now save so many files digitally online, the whole issue of having the physical product versus the space it takes up is a big one. While I keep digital copies of my photos on my computer, my partner likes to have them developed and put in photo albums. The only problem is photo albums tend to be quite bulky. The photos alone from my recent holiday will likely take up two entire albums and combined with the three I already have, that’s a lot of space taken up. How much space will my photos take up?
It doesn’t stop there, though. I have over a hundred CD albums, thanks in part to my NME-reading student years. I can’t justify going down the digital route because I don’t feel the experience is the same and besides, it’s a pretty cool collection to have. However, unlike Rob Fleming in High Fidelity, I’m not going to put up shelving all over my walls to store my expanding music collection.
So I’m curious as to what your experiences are. Photos, music, books… whatever. If you choose the digital route, why? If you still hold onto the physical option, how do you manage to create space for it all? Love to read your comments on this!

I guess that as we get more and more digital, digital frames will be the best way to present your collection of photos. Printing photos does not make any sense in terms of organization. I keep my photos on my computer, on an external backup drive and then online using the Google’s Picasa web albums.

So I assume you show them to people via your computer too? How does that work for you?

I keep all my photos in iPhoto. Twice a year, I’ll back them up to DVDs and put them in a safety deposit box. I also keep them backed up to an external hard drive.
Most of the time I look at them, I do it on the computer. If I want to print them, I’ll upload them to Walmart.com and they will be ready for me to pickup in a few hours.

Thanks for the feedback. It looks like most people go digital nowadays. I might have found one product that could do the job for me. If it works out I will put up a post about it.

Then there are those of us who make even more clutter by scrapbooking all of our photos as well as having digital backups.

I have a hard top brief case for my prints and I use Photobucket and Gmail for storage.
