You did a poor presentation and your boss is giving you an hard time, your friends have all deserted you, and your marriage is on the rocks. Well that’s what it feels like anyway. In actuality things are rarely as bad as they seem. More often than not you need to gain some perspective.
Firstly, try and get away from the problem. When you are in a tense, awkward situation it can often be difficult to think clearly and rationally, so take a break. Once the situation is dealt with, for better or worse, ask yourself the following questions:
Is my response appropriate? Maybe you are getting overly emotional over a small issue. Perhaps you are being too casual about your boss threatening to cut your department.
How important will it be in a months time? Time heals so what is painful now may not be so bad in a few weeks or even days. If you are not looking forward to doing something, remember that once you have done it, it’s off your radar.
How can I improve the situation? If things are getting heated and tense, you may need to consider how you would calm things down. Or perhaps you said something hurtful which you need to take back. Sometimes you simply have to take you mind off the problem; watch a film or go shopping.
How will I do things differently next time? A lot of anxiety from a situation can arise because you have doubts about your performance. Think about what you will do differently and how you can improve things next time the situation arises.
