The Future Of Organize IT

November 19th 2007 Updates 11 comments

Lately I have been giving some thoughts as to where Organize IT is going and where I want it to go. Over the last few months Organize IT has hit something of a rut in terms of people visiting it, and while the site has become much more successful than I ever imagined it would be, I want to continue taking it further. Having wanted to write for a long time, and having designed websites for many years, blogging has turned out to be a great outlet for both of these interests, and it’s only natural that I want to take it as far as possible.

It’s with this in mind that I am throwing out some questions to all the readers of this blog. What do you like about Organize IT? What don’t you like? Do the topics I cover appeal to you? Is the standard of writing good enough? What would you change about the website layout? I’m looking for any constructive feedback and suggestions and would be very grateful for any comments you leave as they will help steer the course of Organize IT over the coming months. Don’t be shy, if you’ve never commented before now is a great opportunity!

This week a lot of things will be changing. Firstly, I will finally be moving the site to it’s own domain name and it will be accompanied by a revamped design which I hope you will find to be much more professional and fitting of the Organize IT brand. Also starting this week I will be doing a new posting schedule where I will be publishing new content on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday (with the occasional variation). Though this will be one less post than I previously did, it will mean I can focus more on the stuff I do write and provide better quality content. I hope you will all approve of these changes and do not end up disappearing in droves or unsubscribing from the RSS feed ;)

Reader discussion

I am a long time reader of Organize IT. Recently when I chopped down my feeds I specifically left this site in the “productivity” batch because of its fresh approach to various topics. Almost all the posts are a good length with interesting subject matter.

I wonder if the decline in readership takes into account the amount of people who read your posts within their RSS reader. Perhaps you could tweak the blog so that only a teaser is include in feeds. Personally I try to visit web sites as often as I can for the same reason I drink my coffee black and my liquor straight up - I like experiencing the real thing.

Anyway, best of luck on working everything out. I’m sure it will turn out great.

I like the personal development posts, and the health posts. I do not cover those, so it is good to be able to get good writing and clear suggestions here. Thanks for asking and keep up the great work!!

Don’t ask me. Teacherninja.blogspot.com leads a sad and lonely existence. Apparently teachers don’t do GTD? I like the site and have been following it for a number of months. I do find myself reading less posts that begin with “The best x ways to y,” Too many lists in my life already. Thanks!

I think you are doing a fine job. Keep the focus on productivity. Steady flow of articles is prefered.

I am a fan of quality over quantity, as you plan to do, so that’s good. I actually see nothing wrong with the layout as it is either. A “top viewed post” section would be nice, unless I’m missing it.

Apart from that, keep on blogging!

You know I’m a fan. I enjoy your tips and think they are usually very different than what is typically out there. My only suggestion - do a guest post for me! New readers = new energy.

That said, I’m excited to see your new design. This is nice but I bet you come up with something pretty cool. Can’t wait!
Keep up the great work…I’ll keep reading as long as you keep writing :)

Your feed is in my newsreader and will stay so - that pretty much says it all, doesn’t it? ;-)

I like most of your articles, especially when you deal with generic, fundamental questions, seen from your perspective. As others have said, quality over quantity matters. I really don’t need a posting every day.

There is hardly anything I’d wish for. A dedicated domain would be nice (mind the redirects, though!). Perhaps the only thing I didn’t like in the past were some “debatable” lazy sunday videos. Anyway, just mentioning it because you asked.

Looking forward to your redesign!

I enjoy being a subscriber to your site. I agree with the earlier comment that agreed with your decision of quality vs quantity, and also agree with the comment that a list of top posts would be nice.

I’m a relatively new reader (within the last 2-3 weeks) and plan to keep you in my RSS reader. I’m not sure how I stumbled upon your blog, but I’ve bookmarked all the recent posts you did about productivity templates and your planner. I think what interests me most is your real-life application of organizing advice that I’ve read in books but couldn’t figure out how to make work for me.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Rolf, can I ask what elements of those lazy sunday videos you didn’t like? I’m aware that my sense of humour can be a little out there sometimes, and I always try to bear that in mind when picking a video. I will adjust my standards in relation to this in the future.

Chrissy, I will get in touch with you about a guest post soon. Now that I’m posting less I have collected a lot more ideas I can use and share. I hope you will consider doing a guest post for me too :D

Hi James, videos like for June 3rd or July 22nd looked a bit too rude for a productivity site. Anyway, they’re getting too much attention now just by being mentioned… :-)

Keep up the good work!
Rolf
