This is a great article, it really got me thinking. You're absolutely right that new year's resolutions cannot replace the process of regular goal-setting. However, I think resolutions may be a good way of kick starting the process. Just my two cents.

Al, that's exactly what I would encourage, in fact I was going to mention that in the post.

Rolf, I agree about how setting goals has to become an habit. I used to have a big problem (in some ways I still do) of setting goals and just not sticking to them. It could be down to a bigger problem of picking goals I just have no motivation for but I believe you also have to make promises to yourself and stick to them.

Very well said - new year's resolution mania hypes the process up in your head. I've found that setting goals in itself must become a habit to be effective. If we just do it around new year's day, we'll fail. It's a bit similar to Valentine's Day or Mother's Day - if you don't care throughout the year, there's no point in demonstrating you care for just one day.

James, I was shocked to see a productivity blog talk about not setting goals, but after further reading, you won me over! To use your "start small" strategy, what do you think about replacing a 2008 resolution with simply a January resolution, or even a Week one resolution? If it's sustainable, then the resolution can be re-set for the next cycle.
