I used to be able to do the multitasking thing, but lately I have to focus on one thing at a time or I get absolutely nothing done. I honestly don't know how people like celebrity assistants do it. I've been reading Shelley Anderson's book Dealing With Divas, and she takes multitasking to a whole new level. It makes my head spin just thinking about it.

I've written about it before but as as great as technology is, it provides little real value. Just because you can access thousands of TV channels doesn't mean the actual quality of the shows is improved. If you control your access you can pretty much get away with watching an handful of top shows and not lose out.

Great stuff! I haven't really noticed how much technology has been reducing my productivity. For example, while I was feverishly studying for finals, I made the mistake of leaving my IM client on, and every few minutes it would pop up and and blink blue, notifying me of a new message. Each time, I would waste a few minutes talking, and then be sidetracked. With the idea of removing yourself from phones and reminders I can see how much time I could save. Will try this from now on.

I was in a Barnes & Noble cafe this weekend and saw a young woman furiously flipping through a fashion magazine with one hand, texting messages on her iPhone with the other and occasionally glancing at her open laptop on the table. It was crazy to think any of that was actually sinking in. Just a few years ago, I might have thought how efficient she is but thank goodness for all the recent studies about how inefficient multitasking really is. I love singletasking and far prefer it.

But, I can also take it too far if I'm not careful. In college, more than a few times, I stayed up for days - taking only cat naps - to get term papers just right or do enough study for finals! The problem for me was knowing when to switch tasks because I tended to get too wrapped up in my work to even get up from my desk to go eat, drink, and visit the bathroom as often as I should. The trick seems to be to figure out a system and then constantly tweak and update it as often as necessary.

Thanks for the great post, James!
