The Productivity Cycle

productivity circle plan do complete rewardLast week I finally visited my local library and took some books out, one of which was Your Best Year Yet by Jinny Ditzler. I’m not going to go into a review of it here, my prime motivation for picking it up was because I considered some sections of it could be nicely worked into GTD. One such feature was the cycle of productivity. The book doesn’t go into much actionable detail on it in my opinion so I’ve decided to take the basic principles of it (the cycle part basically) and expand on it here and make it more GTD related. The diagram on the left demonstrates it (similar to the book but I have chosen more appropriate names for each part of the cycle) and is broken down into 4 sections - plan, do, complete, reward - which I have gone into detail below.

Video Of The Week: Morning Wakeup Call

March 11th 2007 Videos 0 comments

Well you didn’t complain about it last time so lets sit down, relax and have another funny video moment with a video that really has nothing to do with personal development. I guess you could get some relationship advice from it if you look really (and I mean really) hard.

Organize IT Recap: Public Speaking, Classic Reading

March 10th 2007 Recap 1 comment

Its recap time again where I update people on what interesting bits and pieces I’ve come across over the week and whats upcoming for Organize IT.

  • 5 Phrases that you never want to hear in a presentation. Thankfully I have been saved from the most daunting side of public speaking but I think these points are still invaluable whether you are presenting to a small team or a hall full of people.
  • Loudlit.org has a whole bunch of public domain literature combined with high quality audio versions. Great if you want to get some old classics.
  • Have a 5 minute tune up of your workstation (via Lifehack.org) so that you are not putting so much strain on your body (and potentially pain in the future).
  • I came across Behance via Lifedev. Their aim seems to be to identify creative types and encourage creative productivity with their very nice looking series of products. I especially like their definition of organization.
  • I’ve added a MyBlogLog to Organize IT. I’m not entirely clued up on its usefulness at the moment but I was told it’s good for encouraging a bit of community, and a lot of other blogs I read have one so I will give it a try. Please join!

The 5 Benefits Of Saunas And Steam Rooms

March 7th 2007 Health 4 comments

If you have visited this site for a while, you may have noticed I have recommended using saunas and/or steam rooms with regards improving your health. However I have never gone into any great detail on why they are good for you so I hope to resolve that today. Below I have covered the main benefits.

  1. They cleanse the skin. The heat opens the pores allowing all the dirt and grease to come out. Sweating also helps flush out any toxins and the increased blood flow promotes the healing of any skin cuts, sun burn etc. They are great as part of a detoxing program.
  2. It decreases your chances of catching cold and flu as your increased body temperature tricks it into thinking you have a fever which stimulates your internal organs, especially the immune system.
  3. Steam rooms in particular are great for respiratory problems. The steam loosens all that nasty mucous from the lungs and throat, as well as relieving any inflammation and swelling.
  4. The heart rate increases from the temperature of a sauna/steam room which can be the equivalent of doing physical activity like taking a brisk walk. They can also help with weight loss as you can burn up to 300 caleries per session. However, they are not replacements for actual physical activity. Combine it with a healthy regime for the proper benefit.
  5. They are good for relaxing and unwinding muscles which makes them ideal for reducing stress and recharging the body.

There are a few things you need to bear in mind. Temperatures can be quite high in saunas. Only go in if you can comfortably cope with it and though the recommended session is between 10 and 20 minutes, leave if you are starting to feel ill or too warm. Also make sure you are well hydrated before, during and after as you will be sweating out a lot of moisture. Finally, as you have already read, saunas and steam rooms don’t just make you sweat so if you have any blood pressure or heart issues or are pregnant, you may want to get a medical opinion beforehand.

David Allen Writing New Book?

March 6th 2007 GTD 1 comment

Yes, if Time Magazine is anything to go by (via todoorelse.com). According to the latter site, the author is reckoning that from his experience it will be out for Christmas 2007 at the earliest, so I am sure we will all be keeping an eye out for more news on that. Slightly unrelated but has anyone read his 2nd book, 52 Productivity Principles? I have yet to read it (or even see it in any UK stores for that matter) and was just wondering what people thought of it?

Anyways the rest of the Time Magazine article also includes 5 top tips which make for a good recap of the GTD practises.

  1. Mix business with pleasure
  2. Step away from the stapler
  3. Evaluate your system
  4. Ask yourself: should this be here?
  5. Decide on your mission
